Mike's(some times old)News and Notes
This is where I let you in on my personal opinions about a few subjects including;
Photography, Web design, Computers and whatever else I decide to put here.

....

Here I am on the cell phone trying to spot friend Ron who took this photo with his Nikon D1 and 1000mm lens.

HOME CAMERAS MOVIE DARKROOM COLLECTIBLE PHOTOGRAPHICA PHOTO-JUNK
I owned the web domain name "Photospace.com" for over 10 years, from before YouTube, PhotoBucket, Google and all the rest of the photo and video sharing sites were even thought of. Back when PhotoSpace was first uploaded to the wonderful "World Wide Web" I think I was using a 28.8k dial-up modem. I remember doing a system update (Mac OS 7.6?) and it took HOURS to download the "huge" 17 meg. file. Wow things have changed fast!
So now I'm at http://MikesPhotospace.com and all the good domains are taken or being held for a willing buyer.
But, I'm still here selling and whatever else I do as the kids grow up and move on.
They're both married now and they have moved on, but left a few things behind.

After 15 years, the store is CLOSED!
And it feels so good..................
Plus, the commute to the work room behind the garage is a bit shorter.

I started my store "Photographers Space" in part, as a 40 year old's "mid-life crisis". Our two children were both in school, so we couldn't take random days off during the week and family vacations during the year when your kids were in school. Well, with the Lord's help (Trust me, we don't have the $$) both of them have gone to BIOLA University in near by La Mirada. Erica graduated in December 2003 with a Bachelors of Science in Art and she is now married and just completed her Masters in Art at Claremont Graduate School. Joe took a couple of years off from BIOLA, got married to Michelle and has a Bachelors in Business.

The market for all kinds of little specialty stores has changed radically since the internet and especially since the "eBay" auction site has become "the" place to find that item that took months to search out and find. Now you can go online and find tens to hundreds of your collecting passion items 24/7! A few years ago I sold almost one used darkroom outfit per week out of the store. My average customer drove almost 30 miles to visit the store. Now I sell internationally! I have sold lens caps to Japan, Grafmatics to New Zealand and developing tanks to the U.K. And oh yes, even a few eBay sales to people here in Whittier!

After a few years of selling on eBay I am up over 3000 sales. Look me up I'm "PhotoSpace"
Boy this is fun! But it is a lot of work. I figure 2~3 hours per item; Research price on "completed items", Take the photos, shrink photos, write the nice story, upload photos and text, check to see if everything uploaded correctly, wait seven days for the auction to end, Hope the $$ gets PayPal'd quickly, Print, pad and package, go to the post office, write nice feedback...............
See it really does take all that time, so don't fool yourself!

SOME PERSONAL NOTES ABOUT THE WEB and OTHER THINGS I'VE LEARNED SINCE THE "PHOTOSPACE" WEB SITE WAS LAUNCHED IN NOVEMBER 1996.
Notice how some of us early adopters just stopped updating our web sites? I do! Time for me to get back to work and bring this up to date................ (soon)........

In my haste to get this web site up and running I hired someone with no camera or photographic knowledge to set it up. If you have a page, don't make this mistake, unless you like misspelled words and descriptions that make no sense. So now that I know enough HTML to get in trouble I have some suggestions for all you other webmasters.

1. Put a name in the header so when the page is bookmarked it makes sense, "L.A. CAMERA CLUB-Calender" is good, "Calender" is not good and "Untitled Page" is real bad.

2. This is one I noticed on Photospace. The URL was not written on the page so if someone printed out the page to look at it later they might not know where it came from.

" Graflex 3 cell flash gun "

Now that I have your attention, most of us dealers already know that the chrome 3 cell flash with clear lens on the front and a red button in the back is really "Luke's" "Star Wars Light Saber"! If you REALLY want to fix up that old Speed Graphic, I will be happy to help, but I don't have any "Graflex 3 Cell" flashes or any other"Light Sabers" for sale. What I do have are several good flashes that will work and I would be happy to sell for around $40- each and a drawer full of parts. Are there web sites that tell how to ask for the flash? Did your "grandfather" or "uncle" really die and leave his old Speed Graphic to you and all you really want to do is find a flash? Have you ever looked at this web site?? Do you know what a "flash bulb" is and how many "shots" each one is good for? (I do have flash bulbs for sale.)
